## Description

**Our Why**

Datacom works with organisations and communities across Australia and New Zealand to make a difference in people’s lives and help organisations use the power of tech to innovate and grow.

**About the Role (your why)**

As an Engineering Manager at Datacom, you’ll be at the heart of our Product and Technical Leadership team. You will oversee delivery capability for your squads, ensuring predictable, high‑quality outcomes, sustainable pace, and healthy, engaged teams. Working closely with Product Managers (what/why) and Principal Engineers (how), you will be the single point of accountability for delivery outcomes, engineering health, and cross‑domain dependency management. This is a leadership role with a strong mandate to build capability, promote AI‑enabled practices, and foster inclusive, high‑trust team cultures that embody Datacom values.

Own delivery, people, and engineering health across squads. You’ll champion AI‑enabled delivery practices, build high‑performing teams, and partner with Product and Principal Engineers to ship reliable, high‑quality software at pace. You set the bar for how AI tools are adopted responsibly across your squads.

**What you’ll do**

At the moment, as **Engineering Manager** you will be focused on:

- Owning end‑to‑end delivery accountability for assigned squads, ensuring commitments are achievable and met.
- Translating product intent into realistic delivery plans and sequencing work for parallel execution.
- Running and governing sprint and delivery planning; tracking progress, surfacing risks, and managing blockers.
- Managing capacity planning, workload balancing, and reliable delivery forecasts.
- Championing engineering health: sustainable pace, morale, service reliability, and quality investments.
- Driving adoption of responsible AI‑enabled software delivery practices with clear guardrails and human validation.
- Leading engineers — hiring, onboarding, coaching, developing, and retaining top talent.
- Tackling cross‑squad dependencies, risk management, and continuous improvement in ways of working.
- Partnering daily with Product Managers and Principal Engineers to align on scope, sequencing, capacity allocation, and quality.
- Ensuring delivery practices align to security, compliance, and Datacom policies.

We are a pretty agile company, and are keen to respond to customer, technology and internal stakeholders’ changing requirements — this can mean we evolve in our roles to meet those needs.

**What you’ll bring**

**Required experience:**

- 10+ years working in the IT/software industry.
- 3–5 years leading engineering practices or multiple squads simultaneously.
- Demonstrated experience owning delivery outcomes, timelines, and capacity planning.
- Proven people leadership experience including performance management and career development.
- Strong understanding of modern software delivery practices (Agile, DevOps, continuous delivery).
- Working knowledge of engineering quality practices (testing strategies, CI/CD, technical debt management).
- Understanding of AI‑assisted engineering practices, responsible use, and human validation requirements.

**Nice to have:**

- Experience operating in a SaaS or product‑centric environment.
- Knowledge of modern architectures (API‑first, event‑driven, cloud‑native systems).
- Familiarity with engineering metrics and delivery health indicators.
- Agile or delivery‑focused certifications.
- Formal leadership qualifications.
