Nortek is an international technology company who designs, develops, and manufactures underwater acoustic instrumentation for scientists and engineers in more than 90 countries. The core technology is based on the Doppler principle, and allows us to measure water velocity and movement under water using ultrasound. The products are used to measure ocean currents and waves on many different scales, depending on the customer application. Since the launch of the AD2CP hardware platform in 2014, Nortek is revolutionizing the capabilities scientists and engineers have to measure events in the ocean. We are viewing circulation, measuring waves, navigating subsea vehicles, investigating fish migration, tracking ice movement, and optimizing fuel efficiency.
Nortek is privately held and headquartered in Norway. It has about 120 employees among its main office and eight subsidiaries including the US, UK, France, Netherlands, China, Japan, Brazil, and Australia. Nortek's roots are in the scientific community, which pioneered the use of acoustic Doppler technology to measure ocean currents in the mid-1980s. Formed in 1996, Nortek grew rapidly after beginning production in-house, then expanded its offerings into services and other marine technologies. Nortek entered the subsea navigation market with the release of its Doppler Velocity Log (DVL) in 2015. The DVL is primarily used to guide unmanned vehicles below the ocean’s surface.
