## Description

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in joining Roslyn Rescue. We commend you on your willingness to help protect and serve our community. **PRIOR TO BEGINNING YOUR APPLICATION, PLEASE CAREFULLY READ THE IMPORTANT INFORMATION BELOW!**

While our application process is rigorous and comprehensive, it is necessary to ensure that only the most qualified applicants are elected to membership. You should know that we review each and every application submitted to us and remind you to stay focused and patient! Each member has undergone the process which you are now entering.

Kindly help us process your application for volunteer membership efficiently and without a delay. Make sure to follow all directions given to you and promptly provide us with all information which we may request from you as part of the application process. **If you miss deadlines or fail to come prepared for interviews and/or appointments, it will unnecessarily delay the process.**

**IMPORTANT NOTES (PLEASE READ CAREFULLY):**

**\*\*\*PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A VOLUNTEER (UNPAID) POSITION, despite any use of the word "job" on this application portal.** If you'd like to learn a bit more about what the volunteer fire service is all about, [click here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eR98LQtCyiQ&list=PLEhK0BfDztvdXWgMn_7h_6HHODupFi-5L) for an introductory video from the National Volunteer Fire Council.\*\*\*

\*\*\* **Prior to submitting an application, you should know that volunteering requires a** **signifiant** **time commitment.** While we outline the requirements below, it is worth noting that new members are required to respond to 20% of calls per year, which will require hundreds of hours of your time annually. Additionally, new members are expected to complete various training requirements which are held in person. While the number of training hours required varies by membership pathway (e.g., fire only, EMS only, fire/EMS) and prior experience, we estimate the commitment of AT LEAST 100 hours per year. Members who have successfully completed the probationary process are required to maintain necessary certifications commensurate with their membership pathway which require many hours of dedication. We outline these particular requirements not to deter individuals from joining our organization but rather to foster a spirit of complete transparency and to demonstrate the significant commitment required of a member, both initially and on an ongoing basis.\*\*\*

We are here to help you along the way. For any questions IN ADVANCE of your submission regarding membership generally, please email [apply@roslynrescue.org](mailto:apply@roslynrescue.org). If you have any questions regarding the application process AFTER you have submitted an application, please reply to the email(s) you have received from the application system to associate your questions directly with the application you have submitted.

Again, thank you for your interest!

\- Roslyn Rescue

**EEO Policy:**

We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all. The Rescue Hook & Ladder Company #1 of Roslyn, NY ("Roslyn Rescue") does not discriminate against any applicant, member, or employee on the basis of race, creed, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, national origin, disability, age, genetic information, veteran status, marital status, pregnancy or related condition (including breastfeeding), or any other basis protected by law. It is the policy of Roslyn Rescue to comply with all applicable national, state and local laws pertaining to nondiscrimination and equal opportunity.

**Applicants Under the Age of 18:**

- All applicants must be **at least seventeen (17) years old** to apply. Applicants under the age of eighteen (18) require written consent from a parent or guardian. If an applicant is at least seventeen (17) years old but under the age of eighteen (18), their application will be **placed ON HOLD** unless and until we receive such consent **AND** such consent is appropriately verified to our satisfaction.

**Processing Fee:**

- Please note that **all applications** are subject to a **non-refundable processing fee of $85.00** used to complete the investigation process and to cover office expenses. Additional information regarding the payment of this fee will be sent to the applicant by email prior to the start of the investigation process. Applications **will not be considered complete** and will be placed **ON HOLD** unless and until the applicant remits payment of this fee in accordance with the instructions provided to them.

**The Application Process:**

**•** Each applicant progresses through an equivalent and equitable process as required by the bylaws of our organization. **This process lasts at minimum one (1) month, but may last longer, depending on many factors. These include, but are not limited to: the date when an applicant submits an application, the duration of the investigation process (as explained below) and other factors such as an applicant's ability to attend interviews and/or appointments.** We invite you to familiarize yourself with this process and connect with us in the event you have any questions. We appreciate your patience and understanding as you work through this process.

**Step One: Submission of an Application**

- Any individual desirous of becoming a member of Roslyn Rescue, must complete and submit an application with the required processing fee of $85.00 (as we explain in the section above).
- Upon the submission of an applicant, the candidate will be referred to the investigation committee. The investigation committee will notify the company of a pending application during a regular company meeting (which are held monthly, with the exception of November). Provided there is a vacancy at the time of the application, the investigation committee may recommend that the application proceed through the normal process (as explained here). Please note that applications will be acted upon in the respective order in which they are received.

**Step Two: The Applicant Interview**

- After completing the initial details of your application, applicants will be invited to an interview with members of the investigation committee. The primary purpose of this interview is twofold. We will seek to gather additional information which will be used to inform our recommendation to the membership regarding an applicant's candidacy. We will also work to provide a brief overview of the requirements of membership. Interviews last approximately thirty minutes.

**Step Three: The Physical Examination & Toxicology Screening**

- Members, during the performance of their duties, find themselves in many situations where optimal health and fitness may prevent them or someone else from being injured. Therefore, it is necessary that applicants be in excellent physical health. Consequently, applicants are required to undergo a mandatory physical examination by our medical director at no cost to them.

- Our members have a responsibility to provide the community with the highest level of service. Therefore, in order to ensure the integrity of our company and to preserve the public trust and confidence, Roslyn Rescue requires its membership to undergo toxicology screening at regular intervals, including as part of the application process. Please note that this policy remains **unaffected** by the recent legalization of recreational marijuana use in New York State. The use of marijuana for any reason, regardless of duty status, remains **strictly prohibited**.

**Step Four: The Vote**

- Applicants are **elected** to the membership by the membership pending a favorable approval of the investigation committee. Such elections are held at regular company meetings (on a monthly basis with the exception of the month of November). The investigation committee will issue a recommendation to the membership made on the basis of its investigation of the applicant after which a vote shall commence. **Only applicants who receive a favorable vote shall be elected to the position of probationary member.**

**Step Five: Onboarding**

- Applicants who are elected to the position of **probationary member** will be onboarded immediately after they are elected. We have designed the onboarding process to be efficient, educational, and enjoyable.

**Step Six: Probationary Membership**

- Probationary members represent the future of our organization. As such, we have worked to design a safe, educational, challenging, and fun process to acclimate new members to our organization and to the fire service generally. Please note, **probation is at minimum, a twelve-month process**, provided all probationary requirements have been satisfied; however, the term may be extended. Some limited exceptions are made for members with previous experience as we explain below, but all members, regardless of their experience begin their service as a probationary member.
- Probationary members will be rigorously trained on how to perform various life saving fire-rescue techniques in a wide variety of situations and environments, beginning with the absolute basics. During this time, probationary members do not have restrictions on what types of emergency calls they are allowed to respond to; however, **their particular duties at emergency calls may be unique to the probationary member**, commensurate with their training, experience, and comfort level.
- Any applicants who wish to join who are former members of Rescue Hook & Ladder Co. #1 or are former members from another fire company or department who have successfully completed probationary requirements of their respective unit, if Fire or Fire-EMS status, have completed Essentials of Firefighting & Primary Firefighting (or equivalent courses as deemed by the training committee) or if EMS-only, has current NYS EMT certification and prior EMT experience as approved by the evaluation committee, provide a letter of good standing from their previous department or company, shall require a majority vote by written ballot at a regular company meeting and upon approval by the company, said member will be admitted membership as a **“Probationary Member with Prior Experience.”** **This individual will be subject to a minimum six-month familiarization period and follow the requirements of probationary members.**
- **Please note that probationary members shall have no voting rights or privileges during their probationary period. This includes the right to vote at any company meeting inclusive of financial issues, election of members and officers, as well as any other issue that comes before the general membership that requires a vote.**
- **Please note that a probationary member may be terminated at _any time_ during their probationary period for _any_ _conduct_ unbecoming a member of Rescue Hook & Ladder Co. #1 as deemed by the Chief of Department.** Such termination shall be made via a written recommendation from the Chief of Department to the President outlining the specific charge or conduct unbecoming. The termination process shall be followed in accordance with our bylaws.
