# South Metro Fire Department Careers

> <p>The South Metro Fire Department was formed in 2008 when the merger of the South St. Paul and West St. Paul fire departments. South Metro Fire is responsible for protecting life and property for more than 40,000 residents within the 11 square miles of the two respective Cities. We have two major highways that run through our service area, Hwy 494 and Hwy 52, 4.5 miles of the Mississippi River, a BNSF railyard, and the South St. Paul Airport. In 2024, we responded to more than 8,096 calls for service, including 2,080 EMS transports local hospitals.</p><p>South Metro Fire Department operates out of two fire stations, station 1 in West St. Paul and station 2 in South St. Paul.  Station 1 houses our fire department administration along with the up to eight EMT/Firefighters.  Station 1 houses a primary and a reserve fire engine, a ladder truck, 3 ambulances (two front line and one reserve) and various support vehicles.  Station 2 in South St. Paul has a primary and reserve fire engine, a ladder truck, an ambulance, a side by side UTV(brush truck) and a 28 foot boat with twin 175 HP outboards. Fully staffed, we operate with 48 career EMT/Firefighters on three shifts that provide 24-hour 7 day a week response. </p><p>Our administration staff consists of the Fire Chief, Operations Chief, EMS/Prevention Chief, Training Chief, two Fire Inspectors (also qualified EMT/Firefighters), and an Executive Assistant.</p>
