Depending on the variety of needs, it can reach a size from two to thousands of computers. The network set up between the two computers is called "ad hoc", while the networks covering kilometers are called WAN (Wide Area Network).

Computer networks can be classified as closed or open networks. Closed networks are networks that do not have Internet access, while open networks are those with Internet access. In general, domain, file sharing, e-mail, remote desktop, etc. in a computer network. services are offered.

Therefore, before establishing a network, the needs should be determined very well and a very good design should be made. Now, let's get to know computer network types.

Computer Network Types According to Spatial Evaluation:

When we subject the networks to scientific classification, we encounter two types of networks as LAN and WAN. PAN, MAN, SAN, HAN, etc. All the network types we will explain below are in the details of these two main network classifications. To avoid any confusion, I made a classification from the type of network that was set up in the narrowest area to the board in the widest area.

1. PAN-Personal Area Network:

PAN is a small area network established between various devices that the user has access to. PAN nets 10 m. It is used to establish wired or wireless communication between PC, printer and mobile devices in the area.

2. HAN-Home Area Network:

It is a small LAN network used in the home environment. The difference from PAN is that the connections used in the PAN setup can be USB, Bluetooth, Infrared, Ethernet. The basic transmission protocol in HAN connections is ethernet. Internet connection provided by ISP over DSL is shared in HAN network.

3. LAN-Local Area Network:

LAN is the most common type of network installed in a restricted area at school, at work or home. In LAN networks where wired or wireless transmission media are used, all services used in the network can be installed. LAN networks access the Internet via WAN. A typical LAN network is 2 km. It does not cover locations further than the distance. Communication is done through layer-3 switches.

When using 10/100 Mbps Ethernet between devices, 1/10 Gbps Ethernet connection is used in the node switch. LAN needs a router to connect to WAN networks. Therefore, we can evaluate the back of each leg of the Router as a LAN.

4. SAN-Storage Area Network:

A network type of board to access clustered SAN devices, cassette units, backup devices as if they are connected on an existing LAN. SAN network, which was established to access remote data management centers with the decrease of SAN prices after 2000s, is accessed through servers rather than local computers, and users are provided with file server services. SAN networks are widely used in data centers.

5. CAN-Campus Area Network:

It is a type of network established in scientific-educational institutions using CAT-5/6 type blog as the transmission medium through switches and routers.

6. MAN-Metropolitan Area Network:

MAN can be described as a widespread LAN. If the LAN network we have established is spreading across a city or if a campus network is in very large areas, it can be considered as MAN. However, communication is generally done within the local area network rules.

7. WAN-Wide Area Network:

PAN, HAN, MAN can be considered as LANs. Communication of LAN networks with each other is done through WAN networks. The WAN network is spread over a wide area and offers the transmission environment using multiple connection types. Unlike LAN, WAN technologies transmit using layer-3, 2. Therefore, it is more difficult to set up and troubleshoot than LAN networks.

8. VPN-Virtual Private Network:

VPN is the type of network created by using common transmission environments (Internet) instead of the physical transmission environments of the connection between endpoints. There is a more complex connection scheme than point-to-point transmissions. Encrypted and secure communication is provided within the scope of SLA (service agreement) established between the VPN service provider and the users.

9. GAN-Global Area Network:

GAN is established by creating a very comprehensive network using satellite, wireless connection, and LANs to provide mobile connection. It is a network type used at the ISP level.
