**Workplace:** hybrid

**Department:** NCS - Network Consultancy Services

## Description

Sword is a leading provider of business technology solutions within the Energy, Public and Finance Sectors, dedicated to driving transformational change for our clients. We leverage proven technology, specialist teams, and extensive domain expertise to create robust technical foundations across platforms, data, and business applications. Our mission is fueled by a passion for technology as a means to solve complex business problems and achieve our clients' objectives.

**About the Role:**

The Project Wintel and Systems Engineer plays a key role in the design and delivery of secure, resilient, and scalable Microsoft infrastructure solutions as part of a major transformation programme for a large client in the energy sector. This is not a traditional BAU support role. It is a project-focused engineering position centred on the design, build, testing, migration, and controlled handover of next-generation systems platforms that support business growth, security, and operational resilience.

The successful candidate will bring strong technical expertise across core Microsoft infrastructure technologies, with the ability to move confidently between detailed design work and hands-on delivery. They will be comfortable producing low-level designs, supporting proof-of-concept activity, building and validating solutions, and working directly with senior stakeholders and blue-chip customers. The role requires someone who can contribute across the full project lifecycle, from technical discovery and design through to implementation, testing, migration, and handover.

Candidates should have a strong enterprise Wintel background, ideally supported by Microsoft certifications such as MCSE, MCITP, MCSA, MCTS, or relevant Azure certifications. Citrix, VMware, or related platform certifications would be advantageous. Experience in regulated or critical infrastructure environments such as energy, oil and gas, defence, or Operational Technology would be beneficial.

**Key Responsibilities**

- Design and deliver Microsoft infrastructure solutions with a strong emphasis on project delivery rather than BAU support
- Produce low-level designs, build guides, implementation plans, migration plans, and handover documentation
- Deploy, configure, test, and optimise core services including Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, AD CS, WSUS, SCCM, SCOM, and Remote Desktop Services
- Support the delivery of desktop and application platforms including Citrix and RDS environments
- Build and support Windows Server platforms and core infrastructure services, including patching, monitoring, hardening, and resilience features
- Contribute to the design and implementation of PKI and certificate-based services using AD CS
- Undertake hands-on build, lab validation, testing, and troubleshooting to de-risk delivery and validate designs
- Work closely with architects, project managers, security teams, network engineers, and customer stakeholders to ensure alignment to agreed standards and governance
- Support controlled change execution and produce accurate as-built and support documentation
- Understand how Microsoft platforms integrate with wider infrastructure including VMware, storage, backup, and networking

## Requirements

**Skills and Experience**

- Strong hands-on experience across enterprise Microsoft infrastructure and Wintel platforms
- Good knowledge of Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, AD CS, SCCM, SCOM, WSUS, SQL Server and Remote Desktop Services
- Experience with Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops or similar technologies
- Strong understanding of Windows Server administration, hardening, patching, monitoring, and lifecycle management
- Good PowerShell and general automation skills
- Ability to produce high-quality technical documentation and support structured project delivery
- Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic capability across complex infrastructure environments
- Comfortable working directly with large enterprise or blue-chip customers
- Working knowledge of VMware and general networking concepts would be beneficial
- Experience in regulated or critical infrastructure sectors would be advantageous

**Qualifications**

- Microsoft certifications such as MCSE, MCITP, MCSA, MCTS, or relevant Azure certifications preferred
- Citrix certifications such as CCA or CCP desirable
- VMware VCP desirable
