**Workplace:** on_site

## Description

Teacher Tutors is hiring part-time Math tutors, New Jersey–certified teachers, to join our team on a flexible basis. We’re seeking classroom educators with strong math backgrounds to support high school students across the full math sequence, from Algebra I through Precalculus and Calculus, including honors and AP-level courses. This role is ideal for certified teachers who want flexible, well-paid part-time work alongside their classroom role and who enjoy working one-on-one with students.

Our students range from those building foundational skills to those tackling honors and AP coursework. Sessions take place in students’ homes, at the library, at our Livingston, NJ office, or online. Most of our clients prefer in-person tutoring, so we’d love tutors who are open to offering it. We match families to tutors based on your preferred travel radius: you tell us how far you’re willing to drive, and we work within that.

**Responsibilities**

- Deliver one-on-one math tutoring sessions tailored to each student’s course, instructor’s expectations, and learning goals.
- Plan lessons and prepare materials (practice sets, review guides, worked problem sets, proof and problem-solving practice, exam-style questions, and structured exam-prep schedules as test dates approach).
- Build students’ fluency with core math skills and concepts across the courses you support (algebraic reasoning and manipulation, functions and graphing, geometry and proof, trigonometry, and the foundations of calculus) and their ability to move between different representations of the same idea (verbal, graphical, symbolic, and numerical).
- Track progress across sessions and adjust pacing, materials, and difficulty based on what’s working.
- Submit a short session note after each tutoring session and flag concerns to our Director early.
- Communicate clearly and warmly with parents.
- Contribute to our team’s shared practice: share what’s working, ask questions, and help us keep raising the bar.

## Requirements

- Active New Jersey teaching certification in Mathematics (a bachelor’s degree is built into NJ certification; master’s or PhD welcome).
- Demonstrated mastery of math at the level(s) you’ll be tutoring (high school standard, honors, and/or AP courses), with the ability to scale up to more advanced coursework.
- Tutoring, TA, or classroom teaching experience with students at the relevant grade levels.
- Working familiarity with the relevant curriculum standards and exam frameworks (e.g., the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Mathematics / Common Core, and the AP Calculus or AP Statistics course and exam descriptions where applicable) and the areas where students most often struggle, such as fractions and algebraic fluency, word problems, writing proofs, and the transition into calculus.
- Strong communication skills and the patience to work with students who may arrive frustrated, anxious, or burned out after a rough test or assignment.
- Ability to plan individualized sessions and adapt in real time when a planned approach isn’t landing, including explaining the same concept in multiple ways until it clicks.
- Availability for afternoon, evening, or weekend hours during the school year, with extra capacity around exam season and finals.
- Comfort with educational technology.
- Reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license for in-home sessions.

**Preferred**

- Experience teaching AP-level math (AP Calculus AB/BC or AP Statistics), and familiarity with the relevant course and exam description, free-response question types, and scoring.
- A track record of strong outcomes with math students at the levels you will be tutoring (e.g., grade improvement, AP or SAT/ACT score gains).
- Background or experience that allows you to support advanced or adjacent coursework, such as AP Calculus, AP Statistics, or SAT/ACT math prep (where math carries heavy weight).
- Familiarity with the major textbooks and curricula commonly used in these courses, so you can meet students inside the framework their teacher is using.

## Benefits

_Compensation & employment status_

- Pay range: $40 - $50/hour, based on degree and experience
- W-2 (default): Most part-time tutors join as W-2 employees. Teacher Tutors handles payroll, taxes, and provides liability coverage during sessions.
- 1099 (optional): Tutors who prefer 1099 contractor status are welcome, provided they carry their own professional liability insurance and operate through a registered LLC. Documentation will be requested during onboarding.

_Coverage area_

We serve families across northern New Jersey, with most in-home sessions concentrated in Essex, Morris, Union, and Bergen counties. When you join, you’ll let us know your preferred travel radius from home, and we’ll match you with students within that range.
