# The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza Careers

>
Museum History

Founded in 1989 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza is as an impartial, multi-generational destination and forum for exploring the memory and effects of the events surrounding the assassination of President Kennedy, through sharing the impact of his legacy on our ever-changing global society. The Museum is an unbiased narrator of the historical events of November 1963 and the aftermath, placed within local and national historical contexts.

The Museum further connects the past to the present through relevant presidential and cultural themes incorporating dynamic storytelling, special exhibits, educational programming and innovative community partnerships. Programs themes are drawn from the Museum’s historical collections—a diverse and expanding repository of 90,000 items ranging from objects, works of art, films, photographs, archival records and oral histories—and explore varied aspects of President Kennedy’s legacy from the role of the arts to the importance of science to the need for personal courage, leadership and service.

Occupying the sixth and seventh floors of the historic Texas School Book Depository Building, and before the COVID-19 pandemic, the Museum typically welcomed over 400,000 US and international visitors each year. The core exhibit which is on the Sixth Floor engages visitors with an in-depth exploration of President Kennedy’s November 1963 trip to Texas, his life and legacy with the context of the 1960s and influence today. The Seventh Floor is a multi-use space in which special exhibits, educational events, arts performances and other enriching experiences are presented.

The Sixth Floor Museum has just reopened to the public in September 2020 after being closed for six months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The sudden and prolonged closure during this period had encouraged more intense creative and dynamic reimagination of our cultural and educational role in Dallas, regionally, nationally and internationally – and exciting ways to engage new audiences in a virtual world. Several significant projects are rapidly and strategically underway to actively engage particularly younger audiences, educators and the North Texas communities who may not have had easy access to our educational resources. Serving as a forward-thinking institution that represents our local constituents and also supports shared growth of regional cultural tourism, we are fully committed to ensuring equitable, accessible and inclusive practices in all facets of our work, programming, outreach and internal operations. The Museum seeks a Controller who will help to contribute to the organization’s growth, and with special emphasis on diversifying funding sources.
