## Description

About The Patients Union

The Patients Union is working toward a future where everyone in America has the healthcare they need, no matter who they are, where they live, what job they have or whether they have a job at all. To get there, we are building an organization – America’s first union of patients – with a mass membership that is cross-class, cross-partisan, and multi-racial. This means centering disabled people, poor people, Black, Indigenous and other people of color, immigrants, LGBTQ+ people, rural communities and others who are suffering at the hands of our profit-driven system. Our work is not about left vs right, but about building power from the bottom up.

Over the past year, we have assembled a badass team of organizers, campaigners, communicators, political strategists, creatives and infrastructure builders to build The Patients Union while organizing a founding membership and taking on multiple local fights.

### About the role

As a Digital Strategist with The Patients Union, you will help build a digital organizing program that brings patients together to take collective action and build power to transform our healthcare system. You’ll manage and grow our digital presence, create compelling content, and work closely with organizers to develop and test new ways to reach patients, grow our membership, and create pathways for members to take meaningful action and step into leadership.

We want to build a broad digital presence that helps people understand their healthcare experiences as shared rather than individual problems, and brings people together to build the power we need to fight for the care we all deserve.

You’ll need hustle, heart, and an appetite to help us build something powerful as we grow the country’s first-ever union of patients. No two weeks will be the same. You’ll be uplifting the on-the-ground campaign work by our members to topple the obstacles that stand in the way of them getting the healthcare they need and deserve, and helping The Patients Union build national distributed campaigns.

Salary: $90,000

Reports to: Digital Director

**Specifically, the Digital Strategist will:**

-   Work with organizers to design digital recruitment strategies that move people from first contact to meaningful participation, membership, and leadership;
-   Develop and test digital organizing experiments across social media, email, paid acquisition, texting, online communities, events, and emerging platforms;
-   Capture content for our social media channels at in-person actions and events (may require travel up to 10% of the time);
- Create compelling, platform-native content—including short-form video, graphics, memes, carousels, member stories, rapid-response content, toolkits, and emails—that makes healthcare fights understandable, emotionally resonant, and actionable.
-   Identify opportunities to turn moments of public attention, breaking healthcare news, campaign activity, and viral content into organizing opportunities;
-   Build digital pathways that connect people who share their healthcare experiences with campaigns, local organizing, events, and membership;
- Track what is working across the recruitment funnel and use those learnings to continually improve our organizing strategy.
- Follow healthcare news, online conversations, and cultural moments and identify opportunities for The Patients Union to respond quickly, creatively, and strategically.
- Manage email, social media, and SMS inboxes, and engage in our online community, responding promptly and helping connect supporters and members to resources and opportunities to take action.
- Work with the membership team to create and deliver content about our member services and membership in the union, and to tell member stories as part of our organizing and campaigns.

**The Digital Strategist will do this by:**

-   Fostering creativity and a willingness to experiment;
-   Having a flexible mindset, willing to pivot as the organizing model is built and we learn what works and what doesn’t;
-   Building a deeply engaged mass membership that acts as a power base for the work;
-   Being proactive in developing workplans and accountable to keeping them;
-   Making mistakes, trying things, learning, and being honest when things aren’t working;
- Being deeply committed to transforming the healthcare system using organizing, direct action, and radical solidarity.

## Requirements

**The Digital Strategist role requires someone who has:**

-   Experience innovating and running complex digital organizing projects, using digital tools to move people from awareness to action and membership;
-   Experience with advocacy campaigns and using social media and other digital platforms to pressure targets;
-   Experience creating compelling, platform-native content and concepts for social media, including short-form video, as well as content for paid ads and email;
-   Strong communication and writing skills in English, and the ability to communicate complex policy issues in human-centered, accessible, and compelling ways;

- A deep commitment to transforming the healthcare system through organizing, direct action, and radical solidarity.

-   Experience with paid digital acquisition, SMS organizing, online community building, creator/influencer engagement, or other approaches to digital recruitment;
-   Experience with using direction action and/or organizing strategies to build power and change systems;
- Experience with healthcare organizing or policy, campaigning, popular education, research, data, fundraising, or direct action.
- Experience with data and storytelling, research, campaigning, popular education and training, mutual aid and direct support, healthcare policy and advocacy, electoral and political strategies synced with organizing, legal strategies synced with organizing

We offer excellent benefits—fully covered premiums for healthcare, dental, and vision for employees, life insurance, long- and short-term disability, up to 80 days of paid parental leave, a 6 percent employer 401k match that begins immediately upon enrollment in the 401k plan, 20 vacation, 10 sick, and 11 holiday days per year, and more.

### Working on our team

Our staff works remotely in cities and towns across the United States. Many of us have experienced first-hand the brokenness of our current healthcare system. All of us share the belief that healthcare should be a human right. And, each one of us is dedicated to using our skills and talents to make that moral imperative a reality.

To secure universal healthcare for all, we know that we must fight to dismantle the systems of oppression—racism, ableism, sexism, xenophobia, homophobia, transphobia, and other forms of injustice—that stand in the way of health and disability justice right now. Our team is one place that we are committed to continually doing this work.

We recruit, employ, compensate, and promote regardless of race, color, religion, creed, gender, gender identity, gender expression, national origin, age, disability, socio-economic status, marital status, sexual orientation, and other protected status as required by applicable law. We’re in it to win universal healthcare for all, however long it takes. Our culture of collaboration, care, and good-natured humor helps sustain us in the fight.
