> Theta · Auckland, New Zealand (Hybrid) · Full-time · Posted 2026-07-28

**Workplace:** hybrid

**Department:** Data and Insights

## Description

**About this role | Mō tēnei tūranga mahi**

Theta is seeking an experienced Lead Analytics Engineer to join the Data and Insights Practice, based in our Wellington office. This is a priority hire within a team that values delivery excellence and a sustainable pace of work.

This role is centred on analytics outcomes: partnering with customers to turn business questions into trusted reporting, governed metrics, and high-quality semantic models. You’ll work closely with client stakeholders, solution architects, and delivery teams, with delivery centred on Microsoft Fabric and the Azure Data Platform.

The objective is consistent, reliable implementation that enables measurable business outcomes through well-modelled data, clear definitions of truth, and analytics products that teams actually adopt.

**What the role delivers**

- Lead discovery conversations and workshops to understand what customers truly need from their data, beyond the initial request
- Translate business questions into clear analytics deliverables: semantic models, measures, reporting requirements, and definitions of truth
- Design and deliver analytics solutions in Microsoft Fabric across Data Factory / dataflows, Lakehouses/warehouses, OneLake, and semantic models
- Develop and maintain transformation logic using SQL and Python (Fabric notebooks / PySpark where appropriate) to produce analytics-ready datasets
- Apply medallion architecture (bronze / silver / gold) patterns to deliver scalable, governed, reusable analytics products
- Model data for both the warehouse and semantic layer, applying star schema / dimensional modelling best practice
- Design and build Power BI reports and dashboards that are clear, performant, and answer the question asked (Power BI is a strong requirement)
- Build and maintain semantic models, including DAX measures, performance optimisation, and maintainable model design
- Surface insights customers didn’t ask for — trends, anomalies, opportunities — and explain them in plain language
- Document models, measures, pipelines, and metric definitions so customers can confidently maintain what we hand over
- Provide clear communication on progress, risks, dependencies, and blockers to stakeholders and delivery leadership
- Promote consistent delivery patterns across documentation, peer review, and analytics standards
- Mentor team members, supporting capability uplift and delivery confidence
- Contribute to Theta delivery assets including templates, reusable components, documentation, and continuous improvement initiatives

**Please note:** A cover letter accompanying your application is requested

**Skills and experience | Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako**

- A minimum of 4+ years Power BI experience is essential
- 4+ Years experience within a consulting environment is required
- Significant experience delivering analytics solutions in enterprise environments, including stakeholder engagement, modelling, and production support considerations
- Excellent interpersonal skills essential
- Strong experience delivering with Microsoft Fabric (e.g., Power BI, Azure Data Factory / dataflows, Lakehouse/warehouse, OneLake, notebooks, Delta tables, workspace organisation)
- Strong data modelling capability for analytics workloads (dimensional modelling / star schema)
- Strong SQL capability for querying, profiling, transformation, and modelling
- Working proficiency in Python (including Fabric notebooks / PySpark where relevant)
- Strong experience building and maintaining semantic models and measures (including DAX)
- Strong experience producing Power BI reporting solutions that are performant and business-friendly
- Understanding of governed analytics delivery: data quality, definitions of truth, and security-by-design practices
- Delivery discipline: Git, CI/CD, testing, and monitoring practices appropriate to the engagement
- Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills across technical and non-technical audiences
- Experience mentoring others and/or providing technical leadership in analytics delivery
