**Salary:** GBP 50,000–65,000

**Workplace:** hybrid

**Department:** Technical Engineering

## Description

Tokamak Energy is a global leader in fusion energy and high temperature superconducting (HTS) technologies. We work with governments and industry to develop and bring fusion and HTS solutions to market through innovation and strategic partnerships. A major part of this is our end to end capability in HTS systems, from design to manufacturing.

We are the Magnet Systems Partner for the UK Government's STEP Fusion programme, under a £70 million contract running to 2029, working with UK Fusion Energy to deliver HTS magnet systems for the STEP prototype power plant, while also contributing to tokamak systems and plasma integration.

Founded in 2009 as a spin-out from the UK Atomic Energy Authority, Tokamak Energy is headquartered in Oxfordshire, with subsidiaries in the United States and Japan. Today, we employ over 300 people and have secured more than £280 million in investment.

_**We operate through three divisions:**_

**Fusion -** Fusion energy technologies, expertise and testbeds for government and private fusion programmes, including ST40, the world’s highest field spherical tokamak.

**TE Magnetics -** HTS systems for commercial applications including fusion energy, power distribution, life sciences, and propulsion.

**Ridgway Machines -** Manufacturing equipment for the superconducting, electrical and wider energy sectors, enabling the rapid industrialisation of HTS products.

**The role**

This is a hands-on Project Quality Engineer role working at the heart of fast-moving, high-priority engineering projects.

You’ll be embedded within project teams, acting as the quality voice throughout the build phase and beyond. Rather than operating at a distance, you’ll work closely with engineers and operations to ensure the right quality practices are followed, improved, and embedded for future projects.

This is an opportunity to shape how quality is delivered in a growing, project-led environment — balancing practical delivery with continuous improvement, and helping teams adopt better ways of working.

### **What you’ll be doing**

- Work directly within project teams to deliver quality engineering support from build through to project close
- Ensure Project Quality Plans and Control Plans are defined, implemented, and maintained
- Facilitate and guide PFMEA discussions — building capability even where it’s late in the design cycle
- Capture, review, and ensure proper storage of production and quality documentation
- Support root cause investigations and problem-solving activities across projects
- Act as a trusted quality partner to engineering, manufacturing, and operations teams
- Help translate lessons learned into structured knowledge for future projects (e.g. risks, failure modes, process decisions)
- Support internal audits, non-conformances, and corrective actions where needed
- Contribute to developing practical, scalable quality processes that teams will actually use

### **What success looks like**

- Project teams actively engage with and adopt quality tools such as PFMEA and control plans

- Quality is embedded early enough in future projects to influence outcomes, not just reactive
- Documentation and quality records are clear, consistent, and usable
- Teams understand trade-offs in manufacturing and design decisions, supported by structured quality thinking
- You are seen as a collaborative partner who can influence without authority

## Requirements

**Essential**

- Proven experience in quality engineering within a project-based or product-focused environment
- Strong understanding of product and manufacturing quality principles, including documentation and good manufacturing practices
- Experience using core quality tools such as:

- PFMEA
- Root cause analysis / 8D
- Control plans
- APQP / PPAP (or equivalent frameworks)

- Ability to work cross-functionally and influence teams to adopt better quality practices
- Strong problem-solving skills and a structured approach to complex issues
- Confident communicator, able to work with a wide range of stakeholders
- Ability to work autonomously and embed within project teams

**Preferred / desirable experience**

- Background in mechanical or electrical engineering (or similar)
- Experience in fast-paced engineering or manufacturing environments
- Exposure to inspection methods (handheld measurement tools; CMM beneficial but not required)
- Experience supporting audits or quality management systems
- Familiarity with ISO standards or lead auditor experience

## Benefits

- **Salary range £50,000 to £65,000** dependent on skills and experience and will be discussed from the outset

- 25 days holiday + bank holidays, plus discretionary festive shutdown
- Performance-led rewards including discretionary bonus, innovation and merit schemes
- Share options – a stake in our future success
- Pension and comprehensive financial protection package including death in service and critical illness cover
- Health and wellbeing support, including cash plan and 24/7 assistance
- Ongoing investment in your growth with training and career progression
- Be part of world-changing innovation in Fusion Energy
