We benchmark roles to the top 10% of your region, as a minimum. See each role for specifics.

- Excellent growth opportunities. Simple career framework with transparent targets and reviews, regular advancement as you progress. Mentoring with our experienced CTO (technical, 15 years in startups).

- Fully remote. Our team is spread from Vancouver to Pakistan. Dev team operates on UTC timezone.

- Low meetings. We have a “core hour” every day for dev pairing and collaboration, and rarely meet outside that. Pairing / live design sessions are common on an individual basis.

- High autonomy. We focus on shipping small, iterative updates, and our devs have a lot of freedom on how things are built.

- Friendly environment. Our team is friendly and professional, with flexibility afforded to do your best work. We all make mistakes and get better as a team.

What does UpMail do?

We build email tools for hotels. Our customers use UpMail to improve large bookings (weddings, conferences) or to automate their day-to-day communications. We’re default-alive, with high growth over the last year, and getting our platform ready to scale into the next few years.

Practically this involves things like data ingestion, content management, automation, authoring tools, migrating legacy components; a varied mix of interesting problems.

Specific to Engineering, we’re also migrating our Javascript SPA to use “live” SSR tools (Ruby + Hotwire / Elixir + LiveView).

This is all in support of our product goal: iterate towards the next generation of content tooling.

Application process

Our ways of working are opinionated. We know that this approach leads to good results, empowered developers and a happy, long-term team. We also know that many teams don’t run like this, so we’re careful to be up-front with our approach.

Please read the job role carefully, and also read our Engineering Career Framework carefully. You’ll notice that raw coding skills are prioritised below things like “Pragmatism”, “Communication” and “Technical Design”. This should give you a sense of how we operate.

If our team sounds like a good fit for you, please apply. Here’s the process:

- Submit your CV, or a similar summary of you and your skills. For example, many devs will submit their blog or Github profile.

- We ask for a short explanation, or evidence that you meet our 6 areas of our career framework. If your CV or site already does this, great. If not, please write a cover letter with more details. E.g. for the “Communication” section of our framework: this might be showing us a blog post, or a PR you’ve made to an open source project, or anything else that shows that you can meet our team’s expectation in this area.

- Then we’ll book a call, you’ll meet a couple of members of the team and the CTO.

- If you make our short-list, then we have a short exercise (not coding) where we ask you to write up the description for a bug ticket. This is small and can be done in less than an hour.

- There will be a second call to discuss your bug report.

- We make an offer. You’ll already know the basics of this (we publish salaries up front), but there might be specific details to work out based on your jurisdiction or work preferences. For instance if you have asked to work a 4-day week.
