Windflow Fertilizer, founded in 1976, is a full-service retail agricultural fertilizer and chemical dealer serving the Wahluke Slope near the towns of Mattawa and Desert Aire, about 40 miles to the northwest of the Tri-Cities (Richland/Kennewick/Pasco) in south-central Washington state. Formed by an ancient alluvial fan with a constant, gently south-facing grade, the Wahluke Slope is distinguished by its uniformity in aspect, soil type, and climate. The entire slope lies below 1,000 feet elevation extending from the Saddle Mountains to the Columbia River. The topsoil is comprised of excessively-drained loamy fine sand with an average depth of more than five feet.
More than 35,000 acres of the Wahluke Slope are cultivated with row crops, grains and hay; over 10,000 acres are dedicated to fruit orchards; and nearly 10,000 acres are planted in vineyards. With annual precipitation averaging 7 inches and around 200 frost-free days per year, the Wahluke Slope enjoys one of the driest, warmest climates in the state, which allows near complete control of plant growth through irrigation provided under the federal Columbia Basin Irrigation Project along with nutrient management, weed, insect, and plant disease control provided by Windflow Fertilizer.
