**About the Position** 

The GIS Intern will support the sourcing, organization, management, and analysis of geospatial datasets to contribute to research and development projects across WorldFish’s project countries. The intern will contribute to generating spatial evidence to inform sustainable aquatic food systems planning, including aquaculture, fisheries, climate resilience, and environmental assessments.

Tasks may include spatial data inventory and management, GIS and spatial analysis, map production, database maintenance, and documentation of geospatial workflows and outputs.

**Key Responsibilities**

-   Source, review, process, archive, and document relevant spatial datasets in accordance with established protocols and data management standards of the Center.
-   Conduct data quality checks and support validation of spatial datasets collected from project partners and external sources.
-   Assist in data cleaning, literature review, and compilation of geospatial information to support research activities.
-   Support GIS and spatial analysis, including preparation of thematic maps and visual outputs for technical reports, presentations, workshops, and communication materials.
-   Assist in maintaining organized geospatial databases and ensuring proper documentation of analytical workflows and outputs.
-   Perform any other duties assigned to support GIS and geospatial activities at WorldFish.

## Requirements

-   A Diploma or Degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, geoinformatics, information technology, geography, aquaculture, fisheries, environmental science or a related field.
-   Basic knowledge and practical experience in using GIS software (e.g., QGIS or ArcGIS Pro).
-   Understanding of geospatial concepts, including coordinate systems, map projections, raster and vector data models.
-   Familiarity with spatial data processing, analysis, and map production.
-   Experience working with spreadsheets, databases, and data management practices.
-   Good analytical, problem-solving, and attention-to-detail skills.
-   Good written and spoken communication skills in English.
-   Ability to work independently and demonstrate effective time-management and organizational skills.

**Desirable Skills/Experience**

-   Experience using programming languages such as R or Python for geospatial analysis and data processing.
-   Familiarity with remote sensing techniques and processing of satellite imagery.
-   Familiarity with open-source geospatial data sources, platforms, and APIs.
-   Knowledge or interest in aquatic food systems, aquaculture, fisheries, agriculture, climate, or environmental research.
-   Experience in producing maps and visualizations for reports or presentations.

**Location and Duration**

The successful interns will be based at **WorldFish Headquarters in Penang, Malaysia**. The internship will run up until 31 December 2026.
